Road safety awareness meeting organised

GUWAHATI, Oct 23: A road safety awareness meeting was organised at Gorchuk on Friday as per the directions of CM of Assam and the subsequent resolutions taken in the recent DRSC meeting which was held on October 19, 2022 to reduce accidents and fatalities in the October – December quarter by at least 50 percent.
Gautam Das, ACT & DTO (R&L) gave his welcome speech in presence of Chinmay Neog, circle officer (Dispur); Hemanta Kr Bharali, superintendent engineer, PWD, City Road Circle & member secretary, DRSC; Suresh Kumar, project director (T), NHAI; Manoj Lahkar, ACP (East); Anup Jyoti Borah, ACP (West); Rafiqul Islam, DTO & Secy, RTA; Himangshu Das, DTO (Enf.), Kamrup (Metro); Joysing Rongphar, MVI; Nitu Chetia, EI, Civil Defence personnel along with other officials.
Two ambulances were handed over by Suresh Kumar, project director (T), NHAI. The ambulances shall be stationed at Gorchuk and Sonapur police station respectively and can be availed through the helpline number 1033 and the respective police stations during accident emergencies as well.
A street play was also enacted on the theme ‘Road Safety’ during the programme.
With an objective to decongest the bottleneck traffic jam at Lokhra point, the stakeholders visited the Lokhra point to evaluate the possibilities.
Subsequently, another road safety awareness meeting followed by joint visit to accident prone areas was conducted at Sonapur area which started with the meeting at Sonapur police station in presence of Sukanya Das, ACP; Gopal Sharma, circle officer (Sonapur); Hemanta Kr Bharali, superintendent engineer, PWD, City Road Circle & member secretary, DRSC; Suresh Kumar, project director (T), NHAI; Manoj Lahkar, ACP (East); Joysing Rongphar, MVI, O/C Sonapur PS along with other officials.
After the meeting, a joint inspection was made to the accident-prone areas. Suresh Kumar from NHAI assured that any unauthorised median opening in the stretch shall be closed within a period of 20 days.
