JORHAT, Oct 25: As one steps into the venue of the Kennedy Park Sarbojanin Kali Puja at Mariani in Jorhat district, a spicy aroma pervades the air.
Look closely and one sees the idols of Kali, Shiva and Ganesh decked up in lentils, pulses and a variety of spices.
Secretary of the Kennedy Park Sarbojanin Kali Puja committee Amit Paul said that they tried to have an eco-friendly puja this time given the large-scale pollution in rivers and other water bodies when the idols were immersed.
“We have used different types of spices, lentils and pulses like arhar, masur, gram, black and yellow mustard seeds, coriander seeds, fenugreek and other spices to dress the idols,” he said.
Another member of the committee Deepak Dey said that the whole concept was created by Uttam Bhadra of Kolkata, who has a studio at Bokajan in Karbi Anglong district and Kenduguri here.
The purohit, Biswajit Bhattacharjee, a retired headmaster of a school in Mariani, said that the Kennedy Park Durga Puja and Kali Puja were the best in Mariani because they always came up with a different and unique concept.
The idol, he said, would be immersed on Friday.
The Diwali and Kali Puja festive spirit this year was dampened by inclement weather.
Continuous rainfall on Monday kept people indoors and though the coloured lights shone bright on houses and business establishments, the earthen lamps and candles were lit only in the verandahs.
The sound of firecrackers also was muted.
