IMPHAL, Nov 2 (NNN): Manipur senior Congress leader and former deputy chief minister Gaikhangam recently said that Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra is to unite the country against the ‘divisive politics’ policy of the incumbent Government at the Centre.

The march will give a massive impact in the upcoming elections to the Lok Sabha due by the early part of 2024, said Gaikhangam who is also the Congress Working Committee (CWC) member.

The former deputy chief minister was responding to queries from reporters on the sideline of the observance of the 147th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India, which the party observed along with the 38th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Congress Bhavan here.

Rahul Gandhi began his 3,570 km long-march from Kanyakumari and will culminate in Jammu and Kashmir titled ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ from September 7 last. He has covered over 1,400 km so far.

Gaikhangam said that the march is not in the interest of the party or some section of people but a national movement to gain India’s second independence.

“It is for a new India,” he said while asserting that the country’s democracy is at stake under the present regime and people have been suppressed in all respects.

He said that the movement is being launched to unite the country against the ‘divisive politics’ policy of the incumbent Government at the Centre.

“The main objective of the march is to fight against the oppressive regime of the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and destruction of the economics of livelihood, increasing unemployment and growing inequalities”, he said.

Claiming that the march received huge support from various sections of the society as well as different political parties, he said that it will give a massive impact to the 2024 elections to the Lok Sabha.

Gaikhangam claimed that keeping aside the political differences, a large number of people have joined the march which has completed one month.

The Congress leader also said that the BJP has so far responded to the march merely with defamatory allegations.

“However, the people have now realised that the ruling party is spreading false propaganda and Rahul is talking for the love of the country from his heart”, he added.

The march has attracted thousands across age groups, castes, religions and economic strata and generated curiosity among the BJP leaders, Gaikhangam also added.
