IMPHAL, Nov 14 (NNN): A student body on Sunday warned various forms of agitations if the Manipur government fails to bifurcate Dhanamanjuri University (DM University) from the Department of Higher and Technical Education.

The DM University was set up under The Dhanamanjuri University Act, 2017 which came into force on April 6, 2018 through a notification in Manipur Gazette published by the Department of Higher and Technical Education.

The Dhanamanjuri University Bill, 2017 was passed on the floor of Manipur Legislative Assembly on August 3, 2017.

However, the university is yet to be recognized as a full-fledged university by the University Grant Commission (UGC) as it is functioning under the Department of Higher and Technical Education.

Addressing a press conference at its office, Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA) expressed dissatisfaction over the state government’s delay in bifurcation of the university from the Department of Higher and Technical Education.

The non-recognition of the DM University as full-fledged university by the UGC is due to non-bifurcation of the university, coordinator of the KSA, Ch Bidyananda said.

He said that the university is yet to be recognized as full-fledged university by the UGC as it is still functioning under the control of the Manipur Department of Higher and Technical Education.

The university needs to be bifurcated from the department for the UGC to recognize it as full-fledged university, he observed.

The non-recognition by the UGC has prevented implementation of various UGC sponsored development projects in the university.

The student leader said that the students’ body will submit a memorandum to the chief minister pressing him to take up necessary steps for upgrading the DM University to a full-fledged university recognized by the UGC.

If no positive action is taken up by the state government within a week after the submission of the memorandum, the KSA will launch various forms of agitations, he warned.

The KSA coordinator further demanded declaration of results of the recruitment rally of 88 assistant professors of the university at the earliest.
