400th birth anniversary of Lachit Borphukan celebration starts in Jorhat

JORHAT, Nov 18: The 400th birth anniversary of Mahavir Lachit Borphukan, being celebrated across the state and national capital in a grand manner, kicked off in Jorhat on Friday with a march past by security forces.
Police, Assam Police Battalion, CRPF, CISF, Home Guards, NCC, Scouts and Guides, civil defense personnel took part in the march past which started from the Jorhat Stadium and ended its way through the main thoroughfares.
The march past comprised a tableau in which was depicted the valiant general along with ‘hengdang’ armed warriors atop a light vehicle. Songs praising the bravery of the Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, including those sung by Sudhakanta Bhupen Hazarika were played.
The march past was organised by Jorhat district administration where Rajya Sabha MP KP Tasa, deputy commissioner Ashok Kumar Barman, Jorhat SP Mohan Lal Meena and district administration and police officials participated.
As part of the programme, school students from different areas of the district were taken to Lachit Barphukan’s Maidam at Gohain Gaon, Meleng on the outskirts here.
Simultaneously, various games and sports competitions were organised by the Gaon Panchayats in the district.
Meanwhile, an All Assam Prize Money Quiz Competition will be held at Bahona College on November 22 from 11:30 am, organised by the college and Jorhat district administration as part of the 400th anniversary celebrations. The total prize money of the quiz contest is Rs 22,000. The students from class 11 up to post graduation can participate in the competition. Maximum 2 members per team is allowed. The celebration of the birth anniversary of the great general will continue for six days and will end on November 24.
