SHILLONG, April 12: Chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said both Meghalaya and Assam government are working on the timeframe to start the second phase of border talks for resolving the remaining six areas of difference.
“We are tentatively working on that timeframe but we have not come to an actual date,” Sangma told reporters.
His statement came after Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 6, announced that the second phase of border talks will start by June-July.
Asked, Sangma said, “We had a discussion. We have always been discussing this issue and we want this issue to be resolved because we feel that it has been a long time and the people of the border areas have been suffering.”
“We keep discussing this time and again even at personal level when we talk to each other so we are not waiting for June-July, the official talk may start during that time but in the process, we are already discussing a lot of things on a one to one level as we would like to see that the best solutions can be reached so let us hope for the best,” he said.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Meghalaya and Assam to end the dispute in 6 of the 12 areas of difference in New Delhi on March 29, in the presence of Union Home minister Amit Shah.
Sarma had also informed that the Survey of India has already started working on the six areas which have been resolved between the two states.
“According to our MoU they (Survey of India) will put a border pillar and thereafter the entire agreement will be formalized,” Sarma had then said.
