IMPHAL, Dec 7 (NNN): Police have arrested five persons in a follow up action to the violent agitation erupted at Telipati area in Imphal East district over the alleged destruction of the idols two days ago.
One person was arrested on the charge of spreading hate messages through social media while the other four were arrested on the alleged charge of involvement in the destruction of the idols, police said.
Telipati area in Imphal East district was rocked by violence on December 5 evening after residents of the area agitated against the alleged destruction of idols at a temple located in the locality.
Porompat police station of Imphal East district has initiated an investigation into the violent incident after registering a case.
The arrested four persons were produced in the court of Imphal East chief judicial magistrate on Wednesday. The court remanded them to police custody till December 8, the police also said.
Mention may be made that on December 5, residents of Telipati area staged a sit-in-protest in their locality against the alleged destruction of the idols.
In the evening, the residents blocked the road that passes through the locality by burning things.
As the agitation turned violent and disrupted the normal vehicular movement on the busy road, the police resorted to firing tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the agitators.
At the same time, residents of neighbouring localities agitated against the violent activities of the Telipati residents. They vandalised vehicles before the police took control of the situation using tear gas shells and mock bombs.
