JAGIROAD/ MORIGAON, Jan18: The historic ‘Jonbeel mela’ with the unique age-old barter system will be held at Jagiroad for three days from January 19. The mela — enriched with historical barter among hills and plains tribes — is a symbol of love and affection among the tribes in ancient days.
The centuries old barter system to begin at the historical Dayang-Belguri pather from tomorrow. The preparation for organizing the centuries-old barter system which is popularly known as the ‘Jonbeel mela’ is complete for welcoming the ‘Mamas’ & ‘Mamis’ belonging to the hills areas. They will throng here tomorrow with bags full of organically grown ginger, garlic and other products to perform the barter system of goods like curd, rice etc., with the plains Tiwa people in the presence of Tiwa king Dip Shing Deoraja at Dayang-Belguri, Jagiroad on January 20.
On the first day (January 19), the traditional prayer before starting the mela will be solemnized at the Deosal temple near here followed by the inauguration of an art exhibition under the aegis of UNESCO at the mela venue at 8 am. The traditional lamp lighting will be done by the president of the ‘Gova Deoraja Jonbeel Mela Unnayan Samity’, Soneswar Doloi at 9 am. The mela flag will be hoisted by Gova raja Deepsingh Deoraja at 9.30 am. A souvenir will be released by the president of Tiwa Sahitya Sabha Dipendra Nath Bordoloi at 6 pm.
On January 20, the traditional barter will be inaugurated by Morigaon MLA Ramakanta Deuri at 5 am. The open session will be held at 11.30 am where Chief Minister Dr.Himanta Biswa Sarma will attend as the chief guest. The historical Raj darbar will also be held during the day.
On January 21, with the Community fishing, traditional tax collection and cultural function will be the highlights of the last day of the mela this year. On the last day (January 21, 2023), they will return bag & baggage. The president of Jonbeel Mela committee, Jurshing Bordoloi has asked the people to cooperate with the members of the Jonbeel committee to make the mela a grand success.
