Qualifying percentage stands at all time high of 72.69%

GUWAHATI/DIPHU May 22: The Board of Secondary Education, Assam, declared the results of the High School Leaving Certificate examination (matriculation) on Monday. The examination, which was held two months ago, drew flak from every corner of the state when question papers in mathematics, modern Indian language, and English leaked, forcing the board to postpone the exam.

The pass percentage of candidates this year has been recorded at 72.69 percent, which stands at an all-time high since 1992, according to the trends released by SEBA on Monday. Last year, the pass percentage stood at 56.49 percent. As many as 3,01,879 candidates passed the examination out of 4,15,323 candidates who appeared. 94,912 candidates secured the first division, 1,48,573 candidates secured the second division, and 58,394 candidates secured the third division.

This year, boys outshone girls in the examination. With 74.71 percent, the pass percentage of male candidates surpassed that of female candidates with 70.96 percent. Altogether, 1,90,765 male candidates appeared for the exam, out of which 1,42,524 passed. As many as 1,59,356 female candidates passed the exam out of 2,24,559 who appeared.

Hridam Thakuria from Sankardev Shishu Niketan in Dhekiajuli secured the first rank with 596 marks and letter marks in six subjects. Ishrat Fariha (593) from Nagaon Govt Boys High School, Lucky Devi Choudhuri (593) from Ananda Vidya Niketan, Nalbari, Manmita Sarma (593) from Ananda Vidya Niketan, Nalbari, and Aditya Anupom Konwar (593) from St. Joseph’s School, Sonari secured 2nd rank, while 3 candidates, Nilufer Rahman (592) from Duminichowki English School from Darrang, Anindita Borah (592) from Adarsha Vidyapeeth, Golaghat, and Mriganka Bhattacharya (592) from Sankardev Sishu Niketan, Nalbari  secured 3rd rank in the state.

With an 88.40 percent pass percentage, Sivasagar notched the top spot among all the districts, followed by Dima Hasao with 88.12 percent and Nalbari with 88.02 percent. Three candidates from Sivasagar were able to secure the 9th and 10th positions.

Anindita Saikia (586) from Holy Name School, Sibsagar; Barash Barasha Chetia (586) from Sankardev Shishu Niketon, Simaluguri secured the 9th position; and Achyut Boruah from Bidya Bhavan and Dimual secured positions from Sivasagar.

Altogether, 77.18 percent of candidates passed in Kamrup (M). Six candidates from the city were able to secure positions in the first ten ranks.

As many as 7139 candidates secured 80 percent and above in Assamese, followed by 7459 candidates in Advanced Mathematics.

One transgender, 9137 male, and 9515 female candidates secured star marks (450 and above). As many as 4475 male and 4042 female candidates secured distinction marks (510 and above).

Altogether, 2961 male candidates from Tea Garden areas passed the exam out of 5721 candidates who appeared. 3686 female candidates from tea garden areas passed the exam out of 7585 candidates who appeared. The pass percentage stood at 49.95 percent.

As many as 62.84 percent of children with special needs passed the HSLC exam this year.

Congratulating the successful candidates, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Congratulations to all #ExamWarriors who performed well. For those who are unhappy, remember that one exam cannot make or break your career.

“Success is a result of perseverance and hard work. See your result as a beginning, not the end. You have miles to go; this is only a tiny step forward,” he added.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, extending his best wishes to the successful students, wrote on the micro-blogging site: “HSLC 2023 results are out. 301880 out of 415324 (72.69%) candidates have passed. Congratulations to all of them. Unsuccessful candidates should not be disheartened. Start now preparing for the next exam.”

The board examination, held in March, was mired in controversy as question papers in mathematics, modern Indian languages, and English leaked. It had forced SEBA to postpone the two examinations.

More than 30 people, including several students, were arrested in the case by the CID, which was entrusted with the task of probing the leak.

Two teachers, Pranab Dutta and Kumud Rajkhowa, were identified as the masterminds and arrested.

On the other hand, Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong improved on their performances from previous years. On the other hand, a girl student committed suicide in West Karbi Anglong after failing to clear the exam.

Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong have increased their HSLC pass percentages from previous years. Karbi Anglong increased its pass percentage by 25.55 percent to 75.47 percent from its previous year’s 49.92 percent, while West Karbi Anglong made an increase of 23.62 percent to 66.33 percent from its previous year’s 42.71 percent.

10,126 appeared in the HSLC exam from Karbi Anglong, out of which 1813 secured first division, 4084 secured second division, and 1745 secured third division. The total passed was 7642.

In West Karbi Anglong, the total appeared to be 4,989, out of which 729 secured the first division, 1,675 secured the second division, and 905 secured the third division. The total passed was 3309.

Chief executive member (CEM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, in his Facebook post, wished the successful candidates of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong and said, “It is encouraging to see all overall improvement in our matric result 2023, with Karbi Anglong securing 75.74 percent compared to the previous year’s 49.92 percent and West Karbi Anglong with an improvement of 66.33 percent compared to the previous year’s 42.71 percent. The district-wise tallies stand at 15th position for Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong at 26th position.”

“Let us aim for 100 percent success in the coming years. My congratulations to all the successful candidates. Think big. Aim high,” the CEM said.

A girl student at Sildubi High School committed suicide at Chengcheng Bill village under Kheroni police station in West Karbi Anglong after failing to clear her HSLC exam. Priya Kumari, daughter of daily wager Raj Kumar Chauhan, has failed to clear the exam for the second time.

Executive Member (EM), KAAC, Education, Richard Tokbi, hailed Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong for an impressive HSLC result, the exam that was conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), and the result declared across the state. He termed it a remarkable feat of achievement.

Compared to previous years, the two districts have this time seen an increase in the pass percentage. Karbi Anglong with 75.47 pass percent compared to last year’s 49.92 pass percentage, and West Karbi Anglong with 66.33 pass percentage compared to last year’s 42.71 pass percent.

EM gave credit to students and youth organisations, teachers, and officials of the Education Department for their positive support in bringing better results for the districts.

He said, “I am delighted that Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong have made a manifold jump in the overall ranking of district wise pass percentage in the just declared SEBA Class 10 result, 2023. Karbi Anglong got 75.47 pass percent, while West Karbi Anglong received 66.33 pass percent. District-wise, the tally stands at 15th place for Karbi Anglong and 27th place for West Karbi Anglong.”

He extended his congratulations to all the students who have cleared their Class 10 Board examination and also congratulated and gave credit to the teachers, officials of the Education Department, KAAC, and all the constituent students and youth organisations of ‘Quality Education Campaign: Mission 2025 for their dedication and support towards improving the quality and efficiency of education in the twin district under KAAC jurisdiction.

He expressed his gratitude to the chief executive member of KAAC, Tuliram Ronghang, for his support of the mission. The EM mentioned that the Assam government has previously asked the Education Department, KAAC, to close down those schools with zero performance, but these schools performed well this time.

EM said, “The government of Assam has asked us to shut down some schools with zero performance. We were asked to close down schools like Inglongkiri High School, Deopani High School, Ok-kereng High School, Jaipong Adarsha High School, Menmiji High School, Diphu Night High School, and Inglongkiri High School for their zero performance. But I am happy that this time Inglongkiri High School and Diphu Night High School have secured a 100 percent pass percentage.”

The EM said there is a long way to go in accomplishing Mission 2025 to get the two districts into the top five positions.
