KOKRAJHAR, Jan 4: In a major cultural initiative, around 10,000 artists will perform the traditional Bodo Bagurumba dance in Guwahati on January 17 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The large-scale performance is expected to be one of the biggest cultural showcases of indigenous traditions in the state.

Bagurumba is a vibrant and graceful folk dance of the indigenous Bodo community of Assam and the Northeast. Traditionally performed by women, the dance is known for its butterfly-like movements, rhythmic footwork and colourful traditional attire, including Dokhona and Aronai. The performance is accompanied by traditional musical instruments such as the Kham, Jotha, Serja and Sifung, adding to its distinctive charm.

The dance symbolises harmony with nature and reflects the cultural richness and heritage of the Bodo community. The upcoming mass performance is expected to draw national attention and highlight Assam’s indigenous culture on a grand platform.

The mega Bagurumba dance event is being organised under the aegis of the Government of Assam with the aim of cultural promotion as well as strengthening integration among communities across the state. Earlier, the Zumoir Binodini performance held in February 2025 had similarly showcased Assam’s cultural diversity and fostered a spirit of unity.
