113 MCC breaches, seizures worth Rs 168 crore, reports Assam Poll body

Guwahati, April 18: The State Election Commission of Assam reported receiving 113 complaints regarding Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations, with 108 of them being resolved by 9 am on Thursday.

Seizures of contraband items, including liquor, narcotics, and cash, totalled Rs 168 crores in the run-up to the Lok Sabha general elections. A significant number of weapons, including explosives, were also seized. The Commission, responsible for ensuring free and fair elections, released an action-taken report on Thursday, detailing the violations.

It noted that seven of the 113 complaints were major. As part of its Election Expenditure Monitoring (EEM), the Commission seized items worth Rs 168 crores, including Rs 102.8 crores in narcotics, Rs 15.3 crores in cash, and Rs 28.1 crores in precious metals. Liquor amounting to 6.97 lakh litres, valued at Rs 21.75 crores, was also seized.

The Commission reported 10 poll-related incidents, none of which were considered major disturbances. Officials seized 26 weapons, including 72 cartridges and explosives. The Commission reported a total of 18,202 licensed arms, with 14,921 deposited. Of the 1,873 non-bailable warrants received, 982 were executed.

The Commission has set up 184 inter-state and 453 intra-state naka checkpoints, along with 597 flying squads, 577 static surveillance teams, and 93 quick response teams.
