Guwahati Dec 18: The District Commissioner of Nagaon has invoked the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, directing 15 individuals declared as foreigners to leave Assam and India within 24 hours.

Separate expulsion orders were issued following earlier rulings by foreigners’ tribunals, which had identified the individuals as “foreigners” after due legal process. Foreigners’ tribunals are quasi-judicial bodies tasked with adjudicating cases related to suspected illegal immigrants.

The orders name Jahura Khatun, Abdul Aziz, Aheda Khatun, Azufa Khatun, Hussain Ali, Fazila Khatun, Anura Begum, Asha Khatun, Nazrul Islam, Rahim Sheikh, Burek Ali, Idris Ali, Rustam Ali, Anwar Khan and Taher Ali.

Citing powers under Section 2 of the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, the District Commissioner directed each individual to “remove yourself from the territory of Assam India within 24 hours from receiving this order.” The directive further warns that failure to comply would lead to forcible removal under provisions of the Act.

According to officials, the expulsion process will be carried out by Nagaon police. At present, the individuals are lodged at the Matia Transit Camp in Goalpara district and at an Assam Police battalion facility in Kokrajhar district.

This marks the second known use of the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950 in recent times. Earlier, the Sonitpur District Commissioner had ordered the expulsion of five persons who were declared foreigners by a tribunal in a case dating back to 2006, initiated on the basis of a Border Police report.
