TEZPUR, July 12: A 20-day drama workshop for school students of the greater Bahbari-Bandarmari area was formally inaugurated at Khelmati High School, continuing the annual tradition of promoting theatre among young learners.
Organised by the Bahbari Kalaguru Branch of Asam Natya Sanmilon, the training programme aims to nurture stagecraft, creativity, and self-expression among local youth.
According to information provided by the organisers, the workshop was inaugurated on July 10 by noted social worker and Secretary of Baan Theater, Jitumoni Deva Choudhury.
The brief ceremony was attended by a host of distinguished personalities associated with theatre and education, including Ambu Ram Narzary, a life member of Asam Natya Sanmilon; former Assistant Headmaster of Khelmati High School, Nareswar Boro; social workers Prasanna Kumar Rava and Kamal Nath; and playwright Sidheswar Rava.
President and Secretary of the Bahbari Kalaguru Branch, Puspakanta Koch and Durlav Nath, along with the two appointed drama coaches—Jitumoni Kalita and Bishnu Das—were also present at the event.
The ceremony began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Ambu Ram Narzary, setting the tone for the intensive workshop that will see the participation of around 50 students.
In his inaugural address, Jitumoni Deva Choudhury highlighted the significance of drama in personal development and societal engagement. He encouraged the young participants to grasp the fundamentals of acting, stage presence, and performance techniques, noting that theatre education could contribute to both professional growth and responsible citizenship.
The training programme is part of a broader initiative by Asam Natya Sanmilon, the region’s largest drama organisation, to foster artistic talent across Assam.
Simultaneously, the Brajanath Sarma Branch of the organisation has also launched a month-long workshop in the Bihaguri area with 70 participants.
The ongoing efforts reflect Asam Natya Sanmilon’s continued commitment to preserving and promoting theatrical traditions while cultivating new talent at the grassroots level.
