DIPHU, Oct 26: The executive member (EM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Handloom & Textiles, Fisheries and Adult Education, Madhuram Lekthe on Wednesday visited Matipung Boa-Kata Samabai Samity Ltd, where a 48-day cane and bamboo utility handicraft assembler training under Guru Shishya Hastshilp Prashikshan Programme, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, is going on.

The trainees are engaged in making traditional products like beleng and ingkrung – sieve, use for cleaning rice, hoton – baskets, artificial flower made from bamboo, cane tools and Karbi hemtun – Karbi typical house and many more. There are 20 trainees in all.
The EM appreciated the products made from bamboo and cane. He asked the trainees to take full advantage of the training as part of skill development so that they can make craft items and earn a livelihood from it.
The master craftsman (cane) is Gopal Engti and the master craftsman (bamboo) is Dilip Terang.
The secretary of Matipung Boa-Kata Samabai Samity Ltd, Sabina Teronpi said the Guru Shishya Hastshilp Prashikshan Programme was started in 2016. The programme under the Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India, was launched to provide skill development to both men and women.
The first batch of 500 trainees received training on making hand bags from the stems water hyacinth.
She also informed that the Phuloni branch of Matipung Boa-Kata Samabai Samity Ltd, is also conducting training on weaving and embroidery at Sar-ik Bey village under the same programme.
The secretary also informed that each of the four craft masters get an honorarium of Rs 28,000 per month, while each trainee also gets a stipend of Rs 7,500 per month. She also informed the EM that through the Guru Shishya Hastshilp Prashikshan Programme many have benefited by the training. Most have been able to open their own stalls.
