58th death anniversary of ex-minister Rupnath Brahma observed

Brahma was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kokrajhar in 1967

KOKRAJHAR ,Jan 23: The 58th death anniversary of former minister, and a well-known social worker, Rupnath Brahma, was observed at Pragati Bhawan with a day-long programme scheduled in Kokrajhar town on Thursday.

The event was organised by the Rupnath Brahma Memorial Committee and Kokrajhar Primary Bodo Sahitya Sabha.

The event commenced with floral tributes at his statue, followed by a memorial lecture highlighting his remarkable contributions to the society, especially Bodo and other communities.

Representatives from the Bodo Somaj, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, senior citizens, family members, and local citizens participated in the programme to honour his legacy.

A visionary leader, Rupnath Brahma was a distinguished leader known for his literary, cultural, and political achievements.

He is regarded as the architect of present Kokrajhar town.

Born on June 15, 1902, in Owabari, Kokrajhar, he was the first minister from the Bodo community.

He was elected as one of the representatives, in the 1937 General Election.

He had won from the Sidli Constituency on the ticket of The Tribal League.

He became minister of Forest and Registration as a nominee of the Tribal League in 1938 under Gopinath Bardoloi led government in the state.

He was also elected to the Lok Sabha from Kokrajhar in 1967.

Rupnath Brahma in his speech in the Assam Legislative Assembly Proceedings (ALAP) of August 5, 1937 had raised the issue of preserving the ‘Line System’ and he cited the example of erstwhile Goalpara “Many Tribal people in Goalpara have been compelled to leave their homes and settle elsewhere”.

Rupnath Brahma passed away on January 23, 1968, at the age of 66.

His contributions to the Bodo community and Assam as a whole continue to inspire generations.

The organisers of the event told that the event has been observing every year to recall contributions and dedication of Rupnath Brahma, who devoted his life towards the welfare and development of the society cutting across the communities.

“The present environment in Kokrajhar is an outcome of the contribution of Rupnath Brahma as people are getting ushering of integration and tranquility amongst the citizens”, a member of the organising committee said.
