HOJAI, July 1: The All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU) has demanded that the Education Department protect the rights of students. The AAMSU Hojai District Committee submitted a memorandum to the minister of Education, government of Assam, through the district commissioner of Hojai on Monday.
In the memorandum, AAMSU has urged the government to ensure admissions for students in undergraduate courses at Rabindranath Tagore University in Hojai. They highlighted that students who applied for admission through the Samarat Portal have not yet received confirmation for their admission into the first semester of degree courses in Hojai district.
“Rabindranath Tagore University and Lumding College are the only institutions in Hojai district offering science courses, attracting students from neighbouring districts and within Hojai itself. This poses challenges in accommodating more students from Hojai district,” AAMSU stated in the memorandum. They further emphasised the plight of economically disadvantaged students, especially females from Hojai, Jamunamukh, and parts of Lumding constituency, who face barriers accessing education at Lumding College, making Rabindranath Tagore University their only viable option.
Despite this situation, AAMSU criticised the government’s failure to implement morning shifts at educational institutions for several years, attributing this delay to perceived hesitancy among department heads to address the matter.
According to AAMSU, these students have successfully passed their higher secondary examinations and are now seeking admission into undergraduate courses. However, due to limited seats, their admissions have not been confirmed, jeopardising their academic futures. They concluded the memorandum by urging the Education minister to prioritise this issue, ensure successful enrollment of students in arts, science, and commerce streams at Rabindranath Tagore University, Hojai, and other colleges, enabling them to continue their studies without further delays.
