JORHAT, Oct 14: A leopard that was creating havoc among the
residents of Rangajan Tea Estate and its adjoining areas under
Titabar Forest Beat of Mariani Range of Jorhat forest division
was trapped in a cage in the wee hours of Saturday bringing
relief to the residents.
The cage put up by the Forest department few days ago
following complaints by the local people that the animal had
killed several cattle and was creating fear among the residents.
In the early hours of Friday another leopard was trapped in a
cage at Kakajan Tea Estate, off Mariani. The cage was put up by
the Forest department following complaints by the workers
that the big cat was straying into the garden in recent times
resulting in workers and their families living under fear and
anxiety.
It may be mentioned here that from time to time leopards stray
into human habitation in the villages and in tea garden areas
and kill domestic animals and also come in conflict with humans
with people sometimes too hitting back the wild animal
resulting in the death of the animal.
Several big cats have been trapped in cages put up by the
Forest department in the current year along with incidents of
people getting injured from leopard too happening.
