JORHAT, Feb 22: Two Ahom organisations lodged an FIR against the Srimanta Sankardev Sangha at Jorhat Sadar Police Station on Saturday over an alleged action taken by the Kokilaguri branch of the Sangha in Biswanath district.
The complaint pertains to disciplinary measures against a member for attending Me-Dam-Me-Phi, a religious ritual of the Ahoms, at Kokilaguri village on January 30 this year.
In the FIR filed by the Jorhat district units of the Ahom Sabha and the Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Assam, the organisations stated that the Kokilaguri unit of the Sangha had imposed a fine of ₹500 on Chandra Boruah and expelled him earlier this month for participating in Me-Dam-Me-Phi, an important traditional ritual.
The complainants argued that this act has deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Ahom community and disrespected a tradition passed down for over 600 years since the Ahoms arrived in the region.
Expressing anguish over objectionable comments made on social media regarding Me-Dam-Me-Phi, a ritual of paying homage to ancestors, the Ahom organisations demanded legal action against the Padadhikar and the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Sangha, as well as the Secretary of the Kokilaguri branch, the head of the Seva Bahini (the Sangha’s volunteer wing), and those responsible for the social media remarks.
It may be mentioned that on February 18, the Jorhat unit of the Sangha had lodged several FIRs at Jorhat Police Station against the Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Assam, for allegedly burning copies of the Sangha’s constitution.
