DIBRUGARH, April 11: The Punjab Police brought Papalpreet Singh, a close aide of ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh, to Dibrugarh Central jail amid tight security and has currently lodged him there.
He was detained from Amritsar’s Kathu Nangal area on Monday.
According to reports, fugitive Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh’s close aide Papalpreet Singh was escorted to the Amritsar airport by the Punjab Police early on Tuesday morning.
Earlier, eight ‘Waris Punjab De’ members were brought to Dibrugarh and were lodged in Central jail.
Sources said Papalpreet Singh is one of the closest associates of Amritpal Singh and his arrest will prove to be very important in the context of the investigation.
Punjab police will interrogate Papalpreet in Dibrugarh Central jail, multiple sources stated.
Meanwhile, a team of three lawyers from Punjab – Bhagwant Singh Siyalka, Mandeep Singh Siddhu and Rohit Sharma met the eight members of the outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’ already in the jail here, officials said.
The crackdown on the outfit began weeks after Amritpal and his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station near Amritsar to secure the release of an arrested associate.
Many persons were arrested and eight of them are lodged in the Dibrugarh jail after being booked under the National Security Act (NSA).
The lawyers’ panel, including SGPC member and Advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka, Sandeep (Deep) Singh Sidhu’s brother Advocate Mandeep Singh Sidhu and Advocate Rohit Sharma have been entrusted with the task of extending legal aid to them.
As stated by the lawyers’ team, the family members of the eight accused kept in Dibrugarh Central Jail have also entrusted the legal team with a similar task.
The Dibrugarh District Legal Service Authority has appointed Advocate Samir Kr Todi as the Legal Aid Counsel for the accused kept in Dibrugarh Central Jail.
“The legal team from Punjab with the help of Legal Aid Counsel, Advocate Samir Kr Todi have started the requisite legal procedure yesterday,” said Advocate Bhagawant Singh Sialka.
Amritpal and his associates have been booked in several criminal cases related to spreading disharmony among classes, attempt to murder, attack police personnel and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants .
