SIVASAGAR, Oct 20: Delivering the Anjoli Dutta Memorial Lecture, the vice chancellor of Majuli Cultural University, Dr Nirod Baruah said that the urge for self-determination, self-identification and recognition by every ethnic group in Assam will help the composition of the greater Assamese history.
“In 1925, some Chutia gentlemen tried to write Chutia history, but it was not successful. Finally, Dr Swarnalata Baruah completed writing the history. Excess of nationalism or chauvinistic feelings cannot help in the growth of the nation but will only disintegrate what is there as a result of assimilation of diverse tribes over the centuries,” said Baruah.
Dr Ankita Dutta, Youth Congress leader and daughter of former minister Anjan Dutta said that the CBSE course in history has not included Assamese women’s contribution towards national movements, which is condemnable.
The lecture session was inaugurated by Aditya Vikram Yadav, Sivasagar DC and was presided over by Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta.
It was attended by Kamaljyoti Gogoi, IS, Sivasagar; Mrinali Konwar, chairperson, Sivasagar Municipality Board; Dr Saumerjyoti Mahanta, principal, Sivasagar Commerce College and Khalillur Rahman, secretary, Sivasagar Press Club.
