Anti-CAA stir gains momentum in state

SIVASAGAR, March 7: Several organizations including Raijor Dal, CPI (M), Asom Jatiya Parishad(AJP), Congress and AAP on Thursday took out a protest demonstration in Sivasagar Station Chariali against the BJP government’s decision to implement  the Citizenship (Amenmdment) Act, 2019 (CAA).

Chandan Phukan of AAP said that the Assamese as a community is apprehensive of a troublesome future if CAA is implemented and hence, an all-out protest against CAA has been launched.

Pradip Borgohain of AJP told the media that all opposition parties have unitedly begun their opposition to CAA and warned the Centre and the state government that a more vigorous movement will be launched if the controversial act is not repealed.

Monoranjan Konwar of the Congress said that the Centre is hell-bent on implementing CAA because it hopes to improve its poll prospect in West Bengal and Assam with Hindu voters migrating from neighbouring Bangladesh.

Dharma Baruah of CPI said that the state BJP intends to destroy the Assamese community and make it a minority in their state.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Sivasagar took out a bike rally from the Boarding Field in Sivasagar against implementing CAA in the state as part of their state-wide protest programme on Thursday.

Samiran Phukan, assistant secretary of AASU, warned the state government of massive protests everywhere if it does not withdraw CAA which will permanently alter the demography of Assam.

NAGAON, March 7: Along with the rest of the state, the district unit of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) also staged a sit in protest against implementation of CAA in the state, in front of the office of the Nagaon district commissioner here on Thursday and also demanded the immediate repeal of the controversial act.

Several activists from the youth and students’ organization participated in the agitation and shouted anti-CAA slogans. During the stir, Pragjyotish Bonia and Debasish Das, the president and secretary of the district unit of the organization respectively, strongly criticized the ruling saffron party at the Centre as well as in the state. They said that the government conspired to bring the act forcefully in action just ahead of the upcoming general election only to avail political mileage or benefits although the issue is sub-judice in the Supreme Court.

Both the leaders said the organization would not allow implementation of the act in the state and would persist long with all possible democratic measures to resist it.

BOKAJAN, March 7: The Asom Jatiyatabadi Juva Chatra Parisad (AJYCP), Bokajan on Thursday held a protest dharna against CAA in front of their office here. They held the dharna for two hours.

AJYCP and All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC) have opposed the implementation of CAA. \

The protest was attended by AJYCP members from Bakolia, Parokhuwa, Deopani and Santipur. President of APHLC, Bokajan LA, Samson Teron and others also participated in the protest programme.

All Assam Students Union, Karbi Anglong and Bokajan branches also held a protest against CAA by taking out a motorcycle rally in Bokajan LA on Thursday in which many joined in.

JORHAT, March 7: The Jorhat district unit of AJYCP on Thursday staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the Jorhat district commissioner’s office complex here.

The protestors holding banners and placards in their hands, shouted slogans against the central government opposing its move to implement C (A) A,  2019 from this month. Stating that the law poses a serious threat to the languages, art and culture of the indigenous people of Assam, the protesters sought repeal of the said act.

AJYCP state assistant general secretary Siba Kalita, cultural secretary Suraj Kalita, publicity secretary Ashim Jyoti Saikia, executive committee member Nabajyoti Bora, Jorhat district committee president and general secretary, Pranabjyoti Saikia and Babu Dutta respectively and advisors of the Jorhat district committee, Zakir Hussain and Nripen Rajkhowa were among those who took part in the protest programme.

Meanwhile, as per the call made by AASU and 30 other Indigenous organizations, the Jorhat district unit of AASU on Thursday took out a motorcycle rally across the town from the Jorhat stadium to oppose C (A) A 2019 and its implementation.

The protesters shouted slogans against the Centre seeking repeal of the act and urged the government not go ahead with the implementation of the act, which they termed as a black law. They stated that the said act contradicted the Assam Accord, which was for safeguarding the interests of indigenous people of the state in all spheres.
