GUWAHATI, Sept 19: The Asam Sahitya Sabha has declared a three-day mourning following the death of eminent singer and cultural icon Zubin Garg in Singapore on Friday.
The Sabha said the decision was taken as a mark of respect to the artiste, whose passing has left an irreparable void in Assam’s cultural life.

In an official statement, Sabha President Dr Kuladhar Saikia and General Secretary Gopalprasad Choudhury expressed deep sorrow over the demise.
They said Zubin Garg was not only the voice of Assam but also a beloved figure whose contributions extended across music, cinema, theatre, literature, and social life.
“His multifaceted talent and his immense popularity among people from every walk of life made him a true cultural ambassador of the state,” the statement read.
The Sabha informed that during the three-day mourning, all official programmes have been cancelled.
According to the statement, the Sabha has instructed its branch and district units across Assam to hold condolence meetings in memory of Garg during the mourning period.
The Sabha leadership appealed to members and well-wishers to join in paying homage to the departed soul through such observances.
The statement further emphasised that Garg’s death is not just a loss to the world of music and art, but also to the wider cultural and social fabric of Assam, where he enjoyed the love and respect of the masses.
