TEZPUR, Aug 12: Asam Sahitya Sabha, the apex literary body of the state, expressed deep sorrow over the demise of eminent lyricist, playwright, actor and director Hemanta Dutta on Monday.
“Every song penned by Dutta, who made significant contributions to the cultural sphere for several decades, is an evergreen creation. Likewise, his plays also captivated every listener and audience alike. His passing is an irreparable loss to the state’s cultural landscape and to the Assamese nation as a whole,” Sabha President Dr Basanta Kumar Goswami, Vice-President Padum Rajkhowa and Principal Secretary Debojit Bora said in a condolence message after receiving news of his demise.

Asam Sahitya Sabha held a meeting at Lakhiram Barua Sadan in Guwahati on Monday in the presence of Vice-President Padum Rajkhowa, and observed a minute’s silence to pray for the eternal peace of the departed soul. Condolences were conveyed to the bereaved family.
As a mark of respect to Hemanta Dutta, the Asam Sahitya Sabha kept its flags at half-mast on Tuesday at its central office in Jorhat as well as at its offices in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Rangchina Bhawan, Nagaon, Mangaldoi, Jalah, Dhubri, Lakhimpur and others.
In accordance with an appeal by Principal Secretary Debojit Bora, all district and branch units of the Sabha also paid rich tribute to the late Hemanta Dutta.
