Accompanied by Samujjal Borah, Circle Officer of Dibrugarh East Revenue Circle and officials from the Water Resource Department, the team inspected Maijan Lake and Nagaghuli Ghat, engaging with local representatives including Gaon Pradhans to understand community concerns and expectations.

Spanning 44.5 hectares and ranging from 3 to 9 metres in depth, Maijan Wetland maintains a direct connection with the Brahmaputra River and is surrounded by tea gardens. It supports remarkable biodiversity, including 54 fish species, 42 macrophytes, a rich phytoplankton community and serves as a crucial winter habitat for migratory birds.

“The rejuvenation of Maijan Lake is vital for flood management and environmental restoration. Wetlands like Maijan help divert excess floodwaters from the Brahmaputra, reducing inundation and erosion risks,” said Circle Officer Samujjal Borah.

Maijan Lake is one of 16 Assam wetlands selected for restoration under the National Mitigation Fund following a scientific assessment by the Space Applications Centre. The Rs 692 crore project, launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on January 30, aims to enhance water retention and mitigate annual flood impacts by channeling excess Brahmaputra water into these wetlands.
