GUWAHATI, Nov 29: The Assam Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday issued a strongly worded statement condemning what it described as “illogical, irresponsible and baseless” remarks made by Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi and All India Congress Committee spokesperson Pawan Khera during a press conference at the Manabendra Sharma Complex in Guwahati.

The BJP alleged that both leaders engaged in personal attacks against chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling the comments unfounded and politically motivated.

In an official release from the party headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhavan, BJP spokesperson Manas Sarania said the Congress leadership, faced with what he termed its “moral bankruptcy and political frustration,” had “no ethical or moral authority” to launch personal allegations against the chief minister.

According to the statement, the BJP-led alliance government, under the “decisive, visionary and courageous” leadership of Sarma, has been working since its first day in office towards the “comprehensive development of the indigenous people of Assam and the protection of the state’s identity, security and progress.”

The BJP claimed that every administrative step taken by the chief minister has been met with “overwhelming public acceptance,” and asserted that this popularity had left the Congress “unnerved” and “unable to cope with political reality.”

The party further alleged that the Congress has reacted to the government’s growing public support with “irrational rhetoric” and “character assassination,” which the BJP “strongly and unreservedly denounces.”

Highlighting the state government’s recent land-encroachment clearance efforts, the statement said that, in the post-Independence period, “no previous chief minister has demonstrated such boldness and political will” in freeing government land from “illegal occupation of suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.”

The BJP described the actions as a “historic milestone” in Assam’s political and administrative history.

The party criticised the Congress for expressing frustration over the BJP government’s rollout of welfare schemes, employment-generation initiatives and women’s empowerment measures, stating that these programmes have “intensified the Congress’ despair” as its “organisational strength and public confidence continue to erode.”

According to the BJP, the Congress is “wandering directionless” and attempting to regain relevance through “hollow and baseless allegations.”

The statement added that the Congress’ alleged habit of opposing every policy decision of the chief minister and “misleading the public with malicious commentary” has become a recurring feature of its political conduct. The BJP asserted that the people of Assam would “inevitably reject the Congress” in the coming days, leading to its “complete marginalisation” in the state’s political landscape.
