Assam CM, Guv condole demise of Burha Sattriya of Barpeta Satra

GUWAHATI, Oct 22: State chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi condoled the demise of Burha Sattriya of Barpeta Satra Basistha Dev Sarma, who passed away at GMCH on Saturday.

In a condolence message, chief minister Sarma said that Burha Sattriya late Basistha Dev Sarma left an invaluable contribution to the spiritual and cultural life of Assam. An ardent follower of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva and Sri Sri Madhabdeva, late Burha Sattriya dedicated his life for the promotion of Satriya culture, CM Sarma said adding that he would always be remembered by the people of Assam. The chief minister also termed his passing away as an irreparable loss to the society.

Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi too mourned the death of sattriya exponent Burha Sattriya of Barpeta Satra, Baisistha Dev Sarma who breathed his last on Saturday.

In a statement, Prof Mukhi said, “Baisistha Dev Sarma, a spiritual leader and also an erudite Vaishnavite scholar worked for the promotion of Sattriya dance and music altogether to a new height. His death is a huge loss for the socio-cultural and spiritual epithet of the state.”

He also said that throughout his life, late Sarma worked for the spiritual and intellectual uplift of the people and he left behind a rich legacy which will continue to be a source of inspiration for the generation to come.

“My earnest prayers to the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul and hope that even after his death Barpeta Satra continues to take the spiritual and intellectual legacy of the satra culture to a great height,” the Governor added.

Meanwhile, chief minister Sarma also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.

The chief minister further directed the state administration to take necessary measures for performing last rites of the Burha Sattriya late Basistha Dev Sarma with full state honours.
