GUWAHATI, Nov 19: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday visited the Swahid Smarak Khetra (Martyrs’ Column) at Boragaon to review the final stages of construction ahead of its inauguration on December 10, observed as Swahid Divas.
The Chief Minister inspected various components of the memorial site and took stock of the ongoing finishing works.
The Swahid Smarak Khetra, whose foundation stone was laid in 2019, has been built in memory of the martyrs of the Assam Agitation.
Spread across more than 98 bighas, the project includes water bodies, an auditorium, a prayer hall, a cycle track and provisions for a sound-and-light show depicting the different phases of the Assam Agitation and the broader history of the state.
During his visit, Sarma examined the structural features and amenities of the memorial and issued instructions to ensure that all remaining work is completed well before the inauguration.
He emphasised the need for attention to aesthetic, structural and commemorative aspects, noting that the Martyrs’ Column should stand as a permanent expression of Assam’s collective gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives during the movement.
He said the site must serve as a space where future generations can reflect on the martyrs’ contributions and derive inspiration from their legacy.
Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to preserving the memory of the martyrs of the Assam Movement and ensuring that their sacrifices remain deeply rooted in the state’s collective consciousness.
The Swahid Smarak Khetra will be formally inaugurated on December 10 to mark Swahid Divas, a day dedicated to remembering and honouring the supreme sacrifices of the martyrs.
Additional chief secretary, Cultural Affairs, B Kalyan Chakravarthy; principal secretary to the Implementation of the Assam Accord, GD Tripathi; special commissioner and special secretary, PWD, Raj Chakraborty; and other senior officials accompanied the chief minister during the visit.
