Assam Cong sets up legal panel to track probe and trial in Zubeen’s death case

GUWAHATI, Jan 10: The Assam Congress has constituted a panel of senior advocates to keep a close watch on the investigation and court proceedings related to the death of singer Zubeen Garg, the party announced on Saturday.

The decision, taken on Thursday, was made public a day after the state Cabinet approved the appointment of a five-member team of special public prosecutors for the case.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi approved the formation of the advocates’ committee, party general secretary (organisation) Bipul Gogoi said in a statement.

The committee includes senior advocates Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury, Ram Prasad Sarmah, Dilip Choudhury, Hamidur Rahman, Hemanta Kalita and Rubi Gogoi.

According to the party, the panel will monitor both the progress of the investigation and the subsequent judicial process.

Earlier, the state government appointed Brojendra Mohan Chaudhuri as additional public prosecutor, along with Kishor Dutta, Pranjal Dutta and Vikash Jammar as assistant public prosecutors.

Zubeen Garg, a noted singer, composer and actor, died on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore, where he had travelled to attend the North East India Festival.

A Special Investigation Team of the CID submitted its chargesheet in the case before the court on December 12.

The SIT has charged festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma and two of his band members, Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta, with murder.

The singer’s cousin, Sandipan Garg, a suspended police officer, has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

In addition, the singer’s two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, have been charged with criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust for allegedly misappropriating entrusted funds or property.

The case is being heard by the Kamrup (Metro) District and Sessions Court, which has fixed January 17 as the next date of hearing.
