GUWAHATI, July 11: Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya concluded his two-day visit to Karbi Anglong on Friday, expressing satisfaction over the pace of development in the region and underlining the economic potential of local sectors such as dairy and coffee.
According to an official statement, the Governor interacted with beneficiaries of welfare schemes, inspected infrastructure projects, and held reviews with officials during the tour, which he described as a testimony to the progress made possible by peace and coordination in the council areas.
During his visit to a milk processing plant in Manja, the Governor emphasised the need for coordinated efforts between the farming community and government agencies to harness the dairy sector’s potential as a pillar of the local economy.
He said the Manja plant could significantly enhance household incomes and help achieve economic self-reliance for rural and semi-urban populations in the district.
Highlighting the importance of public service delivery, the Governor also visited a Jal Jeevan Mission project site at Longnit.
He reviewed the grievance redressal mechanisms in place, including the maintenance of beneficiary registers, and interacted with locals to check their access to central welfare schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and PM-Kisan.
The Governor reiterated the importance of ensuring efficient and transparent delivery of all government schemes at the grassroots.
In the health sector, Acharya visited the Mohongdijua Subsidiary Health Centre, where he held interactions with doctors, nurses, and ASHA workers to understand the nature and reach of health services being provided, particularly to women, children and the elderly.
He stressed the need for every eligible citizen to be issued an Ayushman Bharat health card and took stock of staffing levels, medicine availability, and infrastructural bottlenecks at the facility.
The Governor also met with PMAY beneficiaries to assess the ground-level impact of the housing scheme and later visited the Regional Coffee Research Centre at 5th Mile.
In his discussions with officials there, he encouraged a focus on research, marketing, and value addition. He emphasised that Karbi Anglong Coffee, like Assam Tea, deserves national and international branding and recognition.
The Governor assured the Centre of efforts to strengthen the coffee supply chain and promote its products more widely.
Further, Governor Acharya visited the Home for Destitute and Vagrant Children at Birla, run by the Department of Women and Child Development.
He spent time with the children, learning about their goals and aspirations, and underscored the importance of creating opportunities for them to realise their potential.
The Governor also reviewed the availability of essential facilities at the home and acknowledged the efforts of the officials managing it.
The visit concluded with a high-level review meeting chaired by the Governor at the Kajir Ronghangpi Guest House in Taralangso, where he assessed the region’s security situation and ongoing measures with senior officials. Expressing satisfaction over the prevailing peace in Karbi Anglong, he said it had created an environment conducive to development and effective governance across the autonomous council areas.
