Guwahati, Feb 24: The Gauhati High Court has issued a stay on the eviction of 43 families in Sarabbhati (Arya Nagar), Guwahati.
The court’s order, which came out on Saturday, halts any eviction proceedings until further notice. These families have been living in the area from Sarabbhati to Chabipul for an extended period.

The court’s directive prevents the authorities from taking any action until further clarification. The families were served an eviction notice on February 13, demanding they leave the premises within a week.
Reports suggest these families, originally from Bangladesh, settled in the area in 1951. They were granted permission to build homes and live in the region by the district commissioner in 1956. However, the eviction notice served on February 13 has left them in a state of shock.
