Chirang, April 6: Encroachment in Assam’s Ripu-Chirang Reserve Forest is reportedly causing significant deforestation. The unauthorised intrusion and misuse of forest resources is negatively impacting the region’s ecological balance.
This illegal occupation of forest land, primarily in Ultapani, Kokrajhar, is raising questions about local governance and political influence. A forest official revealed that 33 families were evicted from the forest land, with most of them from Chirag, who are reportedly responsible for the deforestation.
The official also claimed that approximately 25 bighas have already been illegally occupied. This is particularly alarming given the increasing global fertility and the threat of climate change.
The Ripu-Chirang Reserve Forest, home to sal trees, wild elephants, peacocks, rare golden monkeys, forest poultry, and over 300 species of butterflies, is under threat. Humans have encroached upon the Ultapani forest area of the Holtugaon division, exploited forest resources, and allegedly started farming.
If unchecked, the deforestation could lead to the disappearance of the green forests of Ripu Chirang Reserve Forest.
