The delegation included senior Congress leaders such as APCC Working president Pradip Sarkar and MLAs Rekibuddin Ahmed, Abdul Rashid Mandol, Nurul Huda, Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah and Sibamoni Bora. Regional allies, including Raijor Dal president and MLA Akhil Gogoi, CPM MLA Monoranjan Talukdar, APHLC president JI Kathar and CPI (ML) Liberation leader Ruby Kumar Phangcho, also participated.

The visit came amid heightened fear and anxiety in the Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) areas, following the government’s plan to remove alleged encroachments. Local MLA Rupsing Teron also visited Kheroni to engage with residents.

Speaking to the media, Debabrata Saikia criticised the BJP-led state government and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), alleging administrative failure in maintaining law and order. He accused the authorities of selectively suppressing information and depriving certain sections of the population of government schemes.

The delegation paid respects at the residence of Suruj Dey, who was killed during the arson incident and visited the family of Linus Phangcho, a youth who lost his life in police firing during the unrest.

Opposition leaders described the violence as a consequence of “administrative negligence” and demanded a high-level investigation, immediate accountability from the state government and justice and compensation for the victims’ families.
