Assam remembers Lachit Borphukan on 402nd birth anniversary

Tributes honour the legendary Ahom General’s unparalleled bravery & his enduring legacy in the Battle of Saraighat

GUWAHATI, Nov 24:On the occasion of the 402nd birth anniversary of Bir Lachit Borphukan on Sunday, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya paid rich floral tributes to Bir Lachit Borphukan at a function held at Raj Bhavan.

The day, celebrated to honour the bravery and leadership of Lachit Borphukan, saw Governor Acharya expressing his reverence, stating, “Lachit Borphukan was one of the greatest military leaders of our country and a source of inspiration to all. His great victory in the Battle of Saraighat over the Mughal Army makes him one of the greatest leaders of medieval India.”

Governor Acharya also emphasised that Lachit Borphukan’s prodigious legacy and legendary acts should serve as a lesson for every Indian. He expressed hope that observing the birthdays of great leaders like Lachit would provide an opportunity for the younger generation to acquaint themselves with the rich legacy the great Ahom General left behind for posterity.

Officers and staff of Raj Bhavan also paid floral tributes to the great Lachit Borphukan.

Similarly, the District Commissioner’s Office in Cachar came alive on Sunday as the district administration celebrated Lachit Divas, marking the birth anniversary of the legendary Ahom general, Bir Lachit Borphukan. The event paid homage to the valour and leadership of the iconic figure who played a pivotal role in protecting Assam from Mughal invasions.

Presiding over the occasion, Cachar district commissioner Mridul Yadav delivered a stirring address, emphasising the enduring legacy of Lachit Borphukan. “Bir Lachit Borphukan epitomises the spirit of patriotism, resilience, and selflessness. His bravery in the Battle of Saraighat is not just a part of Assam’s history but an inspiration for the entire nation. Today, as we pay tribute to him, let us imbibe his qualities and work towards building a society rooted in courage and integrity,” said DC Yadav.

The ceremony commenced with the district commissioner and the administrative staff offering floral tributes at the statue of Lachit Borphukan, a symbolic gesture of respect and admiration. The air was filled with reverence as participants reflected on the hero’s unparalleled contributions to preserving the sovereignty of Assam.

Attendees were reminded of Lachit Borphukan’s strategic acumen and unwavering commitment, which continue to resonate in the hearts of millions. The event concluded with a call to action, urging the community to uphold the values of unity and service exemplified by the Ahom general.

As Cachar united in remembrance, the Lachit Divas celebration underscored the timeless relevance of the hero’s ideals, rekindling a sense of pride and patriotism among all present.

Our Morigaon correspondent adds: The birth anniversary of the legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan was celebrated by the Hindu Jagaran Morigaon district committee with enthusiasm at Morigaon Stadium on Sunday.

The Hindu Jagaran Mancha, Morigaon district committee, observed Lachit Divas in cooperation with the people of Morigaon, commemorating the birth anniversary of the Assamese hero Lachit Borphukan. The Hindu Jagaran Morigaon district committee organised a grand gathering of thousands of children dressed as Lachit Borphukan, who performed the evergreen song ‘Akou Jadi Jaba Lage Saraighataloi’ in a symphony led by a group of girls on stage. The event was graced by RSS Uttarpub Khetra Prasarak Basistha Bujar Barua, MLA Ramakanta Deuri, Minal Laskar, Uttar-Pub Sanjujak of HJM Assam, Zila Karyabah Kushram Hazarika, president of Morigaon HJM Jyotiprasad Das, secretary of Morigaon HJM Utpal Kr Nath, BJP president Prabin Medhi, and ex-CEM of TAC Paban Manta.

Speaking as the chief spokesperson, UP’s Khetra Prasarak Basistha Bujar Barua appealed to the people of Assam to engage in laborious activities such as farming—fishery, paddy cultivation, goat rearing, piggery, etc.—as a means of livelihood to reduce dependence on the Bengali-speaking minority’s farming. He stated, “If we wish to keep agricultural land and farming in our hands, we should be laborious.”

Basistha Bujar Barua further remarked, “Some youths have been socially boycotted for adopting these farming practices as their livelihood within Assamese society. This will harm rather than unite our society in making Assam a ‘Bor Asom’. Many youths are compelled to take up farming due to the recruitment process failing to fulfill their dreams of government jobs in the state.”

Earlier, Morigaon district commissioner Debashis Sarma inaugurated the program for Lachit Divas by singing a song dedicated to Lachit Borphukan. During the program, students from Morigaon Sankardev Niketan and Charaibahi Sankardev Niketan performed Krishna dances to mark the occasion.

Our Tezpur correspondent adds: In connection with Lachit Divas, the organising committee of the upcoming Tezpur Literature Festival, in association with Tezpur AASU and AJYCP, organised a marathon race on Sunday morning. The event was flagged off from Lachit Borphukan’s statue at Church Field in the heart of Tezpur town by noted sports personality and physician Dr Biswa Ranjan Kalita, in the presence of the working president of the Tezpur Literature Festival, Joysree Bhuyan, joint secretary Dr Sarita Sarmah, Bikram Kalita, Tezpur Unit AASU president Debanjan Pathak, and ex-general secretary of Tezpur Anchalick AJYCP, Chittaranjan Hazarika, among other dignitaries. The event saw participation from a host of budding athletes above 18 years of age from across the state. The marathon was organised for both men and women.

In the women’s category, Rekhamani Saikia of Dhemaji district won the first prize, while the second and third prizes were bagged respectively by Phulmani Orang of Tinsukia district and Sarati Bhumij of the Biswanath Chariali area. Similarly, in the men’s category, the first prize was bagged by Bhula Das of Sonitpur district, while the second and third prizes were bagged respectively by Sanju Das (Sonitpur) and Binud Daimary (Sonitpur).

Prior to the beginning of the event, the dignitaries, including the Sonitpur DC Ankur Bharali, paid rich tributes to Lachit Borphukan.

Likewise, Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das College NCC celebrated NCC Day on Sunday. The special day began with floral tributes at the statue of Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das. Smartly turned-out cadets assembled at the college early on Sunday morning. After this, all cadets took out a rally from the main college entrance up to the Dhekiajuli Police Station point on NH 15.

This was followed by paying homage to Lachit Borphukan on his 402nd birth anniversary. Cadets and ANOs paid floral tributes at the portrait of Ahom general. On the occasion, Capt Dr Jyotshna Baruah and Lt Dr Pitambar Sedai spoke briefly about the significant contribution of the famous Ahom general in defeating the mighty Mughal army in the Battle of Saraighat. Both of them urged the cadets to imbibe the spirit of service to the nation, following the ideals of Lachit Borphukan.

A good number of ex-cadets were also present on the occasion. After the homage ceremony, all cadets participated in a cleanliness drive on the campus. At the end, refreshments were provided to all present at the event. The entire program was supervised by Capt Dr Jyotshna Baruah and Lt Dr Pitambar Sedai.

Our Sivasagar correspondent adds: Lachit Borphukan’s 402nd birth anniversary was observed with much festivity in several places in Sivasagar on Sunday. At Sukati Ali near Gargaon, where Lachit Borphukan is believed to have been born, the tarpan ritual was performed by Dhien Chetia, working president of the All Assam Ahom Sabha, along with journalists Manoj Kr Birthakur and Pradip Gogoi. Dr Simanta Baruah, professor at Bir Lachit Borphukan College, inaugurated a drawing competition among school children.

Dr Saumendranath Buragohain, senior scientist at the Central Silk Board; Dr Manjit Gogoi, principal of Janjhi HNS College; Dr Prasanta Ke Chutia, an educationist; and Debajyoti Gogoi, circle officer, Sivasagar Circle, addressed the open meeting as invited speakers. The meeting was presided over by Bharat Chetia.

At Lachit Park, the day was observed by the Prasikriti Sinha Sangrakshan Samiti, led by Birinchi Gohain, Sushil Baruah, Bharat Sharma, Manoj Gogoi, and Bina Goswami.

In Hanhchora, the day was marked by a meeting presided over by Prasanna Sing. Addressing the gathering, Motiur Rahman, president of the Asom Sanmilita Mahasangha, spoke in detail about the background of the Saraighat Battle. He stated that the Mughals had brought 1,000 ferocious dogs to engage in battle against the Ahom soldiers. The Ahoms killed these dogs by poisoning their food. Atan Buragohain, the Ahom Prime Minister, also fought the battle against the Mughals from his North Guwahati camp.

Dr Hemanta Gogoi, president of Tai Ahom Sahitya Sabha; Srimanta Dutta; Ananta Barua; Purnakanta Bharali; and Kiran Sing also addressed the gathering.

The observances at Lachit Park concluded with various cultural and educational events.
