Guwahati, 08 Nov: Assam will observe Swahid Diwas at the newly built Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Boragaon, Guwahati on Dec 10, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma set to open the state’s first official memorial dedicated to the martyrs of the 1979–1985 Assam Movement.
State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora announced the event on Dec 8, noting that the programme will honour the 860 people who died during the agitation. The chief minister will light the Swahid Pranam Jyoti, the eternal flame at the memorial complex, while AASU leaders are expected to join the tribute.
Earlier, the chief minister urged households to light lamps and sing Swahid Pranamu Tumak on Dec 10 in remembrance. Officials said the memorial stands as a lasting symbol of the movement that shaped Assam’s sociopolitical landscape in the 1980s.
