SIVASAGAR, Dec 13: The ATASU Sivasagar district committee, in a press meet on Tuesday, announced a 48-hour district bandh in protest against the ongoing encroachment of the historic Jamuna. The three-and-a-half-century-old ditch, dug around the iconic Sivasagar Birpukhuri by Draupadi, the Queen consort of Siva Singha, faces unabated threats.
Addressing the press, Akhil Ahom, district president, along with Nipu Saikia, vice president, and secretaries Mintu Duwora and Sumit Handique, expressed disappointment with the Sivasagar district administration and the Archaeological Department. Despite repeated petitions from various organisations, the issue has been overlooked, posing a significant threat to the renowned Sivadoul and the Borpukhuri.
As part of their agitation, ATASU activists plan to block the Archaeology Department office on December 18 and the Sivasagar District Commissioner’s Office on December 22. The district bandh is scheduled for December 29, aiming to draw attention to the urgency of addressing the encroachment issue.
