Awareness camp on ‘Elimination of Violence against Women’ held at Margherita

MARGHERITA, Dec 1: Margherita sub-divisional administration (civil) organised an awareness camp for the women living and working in the tea garden with the theme ‘Naari Shakti – With You, For You’ on Thursday at Margherita Tea Estate.
The camp was organised in view of the UNITE Campaign – an initiative of 16 days activism to end violence against women and girls launched on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25 and will conclude on the International Human Rights Day on December 10.
Preeti Kumari, IAS, SDO(C), Margherita was present as the chief guest for the event and addressed the women in particular while reflecting on the matter that violence against women is not a small issue and that the administration will always stand by the victim.
Preeti Kumari said that self-respect is an important factor and the first step to get help is asking for help and women should not hesitate to stand up against any sort of violence.
Kamlesh Chakraborty, senior advocate of Tinsukia district and Puspa Singh, associate professor, department of Hindi, Margherita College were invited as speakers, who sensitised the women about the legal procedures related to violence against women and role of women in the society respectively.
Aditi Neog, election officer of Margherita; Dorothy Das, labour officer, Tinsukia; KM Deka, manager of Margherita Tea Estate; Anita Das Mahanta, women activist of Margherita and other members and representatives of various organisations also attended the awareness camp.
