Awareness campaign against tobacco consumption held under Mariani Revenue Circle of Jorhat district

HT CorrespondentJORHAT, May 3: Jorhat deputy commissioner Pulak Mahanta, on Tuesday, took part in an awareness programme on ill-effects of consumption of tobacco and its products at Naganijan Chah Bagisa Adarsha Vidyalaya at Nakachari under Mariani Revenue Circle of Jorhat district.

Dr Bhaktimay Bhattacharyya, nodal officer of District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC), Jorhat, informed that Mahanta, while speaking about harmful effects on health due to tobacco consumption urged the upcoming generation to stay away from consumption of all kinds of tobacco-related products and alcohol.

The awareness programme held in the said school was part of the awareness drive to be carried out in seven model high schools in tea gardens areas in the district established by the state government for all-round development of children of tea estate areas.

Along with the deputy commissioner senior district administration and health department officials including joint director of Health Services (Jorhat) Dr Shashidhar Phukan, Dr Bhaktimay Bhattacharyya, who is also the district TB officer, interacted with the students on a wide range of topics.

The deputy commissioner also gave away prizes to students who secured positions in a quiz competition organised on health topics.

Earlier in the day, under the TB-free campaign as part of the ‘Moromor Jorhat’ initiative of the district administration, Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, the deputy commissioner along with Dr Bhattacharyya, Health department and tea garden officials took part in the exercise of identifying TB patients by visiting households in Gabroo Tea Estate.

During the exercise, food packets were distributed to people who had undergone tests for TB and to patients who were undergoing treatment for TB.
