HT CorrespondentSIVASAGAR, Sept 8: The area around the historic Sivasagar Sivadol was declared a beggar-free zone by the Sivasagar district administration two years ago. The hordes of beggars that used to gather around the temple were sent to different home care institutions run by NGOs. But of late, the beggars have come back to sit around the temple day in and day out and a section of devotees have started to offer them alms.

The Doul Development Committee appears to be indifferent to the problem. The beggars have been creating chaos while quarrelling amongst themselves late into the night and have polluted the whole area by littering garbage everywhere and defecating along the Fuleswari Girls’ HS School Road.

The local people are worried as there are all sorts of petty criminals in the group.
