Bishu Dima festival begins with colourful celebrations

HOWRAGHAT, Jan 27: The two-day Bishu Dima festival, the traditional agricultural celebration of the Dimasa community, began on Tuesday with colourful programmes at Tularam Senapati Kshetra in East Gazalipar village under Howraghat in Karbi Anglong district.

Organised by the Howraghat Regional Bishu Dima Hasom, the celebrations commenced with the ceremonial hoisting of the flag followed by a tribute to martyrs.

A vibrant cultural procession showcasing the rich heritage, customs and traditional attire of the Dimasa community marked the opening day and drew large participation from villagers and visitors.

An open meeting held later in the day was presided over by Greek Langthasa, president of the Howraghat Regional Bishu Dima Committee. Howraghat MLA Darsing Ronghang attended the programme as chief guest and, in his address, stressed the importance of preserving indigenous culture and traditions.

He said agricultural festivals like Bishu Dima play a vital role in strengthening community bonds and passing cultural values to younger generations.

Several prominent local personalities were present on the occasion, including Howraghat College professor Dr Madan Daolagajau, social activist Rajen Bora, vice-chairman of Howraghat Municipal Board Ramesh Kemprai, ‘Mission Cheng’ NGO president Jyotirmoy Kharikapsha, chairman of Howraghat VDC Buddheswar Teron and Gautam Inghi, chairman of the Citizens’ Security Committee, Howraghat police station.

The programme was also attended by government officials, gaonburhas and local leaders, who joined the community in celebrating the harvest season.

The festivities will continue on Tuesday with cultural performances, traditional rituals and community feasts, organisers said.
