JORHAT, March 27: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah stated that Congress and the United Opposition Forum, Assam (UOFA) would be fighting the parliamentary elections in the state by highlighting the burning problems of the state.

Addressing newspersons at a hotel here on Tuesday, Borah, accompanied by leader and deputy leader of the Opposition in state assembly – Debabrata Saikia and Rakibul Hussain, and Raijor Dal leader and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, said that the Congress and the Opposition partners were presenting the burning issues plaguing the state before the voters as the platform to fight the Lok Sabha elections. Borah termed Gaurav Gogoi as the ‘Voice of the North East Region’ and an emerging leader of the country, stating that Gaurav had done very well by raising issues of the region and also issues of national importance. Borah, while acknowledging the overwhelming response to Gaurav across Jorhat LS seat by the Congress rank and file and the general people, mentioned that it was sending a positive message. Replying to a query regarding the chief minister stating that Bhupen Borah would join BJP and two constituencies have been kept aside for him (Borah), Borah dismissed it, saying that Sarma always uses such ploys to divert attention from serious issues by making frivolous statements. “Whenever the Opposition brings up serious issues like huge unemployment, social and financial conditions, the chief minister makes light of it by saying that I will be joining the BJP to divert attention,” Borah said, alleging that Sarma resorts to such techniques as psychological mind games to take on the Opposition.
