Administration takes efforts to restore road, water & electricity

SILCHAR, May 24: The Cachar district is slowly crawling back to normalcy following a devastating flood with incessant rain over the past few weeks, which has left the district with significant loss of properties, lives and livelihoods of many.
As the rain subsided and with the improvement of the weather condition, people of Silchar town are seen buying essential items including fish, vegetables and all other items available with normal prices as district administration Cachar has already intensified raids against unscrupulous traders allegedly involved in hiking of prices of vegetables and essential commodities in different parts of Cachar district. Continuous efforts are also being made by Cachar district administration and line departments to restore surface transport, electricity, water supply, etc.
As per the latest report received from the District Disaster Management Authority on Monday, 294 relief camps established in different parts of Cachar district were being facilitated with essential services for the inmates who lost their houses due to devastating floods.
Cachar administration is giving top priorities to restore all the road ways of Cachar connecting to the neighbouring districts and Guwahati.
Meanwhile, the electricity supply is partially restored and the PHE staff and APDCL are now on the spot to repair the severely damaged steel floating barge in Sadarghat and transformers to restore electricity.
Meanwhile, the water level of rivers in Cachar district has come down below the danger level at Annapurna Ghat at 7 am on Monday but 1 lakh 98 thousand 128 people are still in the grip of floods in the district.
According to the statement made by an official of the Food & Civil Supply department, 571 quintals of rice, 146 quintals of pulses, 52 quintals of salt and 2234 liters of edible oil were distributed as materials for the 294 relief camps in the district.
As reported, there are 33,462 flood affected victims under Katigorah revenue circle, 1894 under Silchar sadar, 10,309 under Sonai circle and 43 under Udarbandh circle of Cachar district.
Animal feeds were also distributed as food items in different places of the district on the day. Places are Ashram Road of Silchar, Jarultala, Chhechari, Nij Joynagar, Kumarpara binnakandi, Kaptanpur, South Krishnapur, Dhamalia, Natun Ramnagar, Satkarakandi.
With the improvement of the flood situation, sluice gates were also made operational by the water resources department.
