Guwahati, May 1: In a significant international recognition for Assam, Dr Purnima Devi Barman has been conferred with the Whitley Gold Award 2024, often referred to as the “Green Oscar”.
This award is the highest global honour for conservation efforts. Dr Barman is known for her work towards saving the endangered greater adjutant or Hargila, one of the world’s rarest storks.
She has led a global movement to raise awareness about the protection of the greater adjutant, uniting local women in Assam for the cause. Post the announcement of the award, she was featured on BBC Radio 4’s Today show where she discussed her work.
Earlier, in 2022, she was awarded the UN Environment Champions of the Earth Award for her conservation efforts.
A conservationist, entrepreneur, economist, women’s rights activist, and a wildlife biologist, Dr Barman was also a speaker at Pratidin Time’s The Conclave 2023, where she highlighted the importance of conserving the diminishing greater adjutant population.
