‘Chatak Sanman’ to noted artists Dulal Roy & Syed Sadullah

HT CorrespondentTEZPUR, Sept 7: ‘Chatak’, a frontline socio-cultural platform of Tezpur declared its ‘Chatak Award 2022’ at a press meet held at the office of Tezpur Journalists Union. Declaring the award to two noted artists of the state, Anil Bhattacharya, president and secretary duo of Chatak- Bhabani Bhuyan and Pankaj Sarma told that ‘Chatak Sanman-2022’ will be conferred to renowned theatre artist Dulal Roy and prominent musician, lyricist and radio announcer Syed Sadullah.

Dulal Roy, renowned playwright, actor and director who was awarded with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1998 in the category of direction and Natasurya Phani Sharma Award by the Government of Assam in 2019. His onstage directorial activity is known for its experimentation, particularly with productions of modern European drama that influenced further experiments in Assamese theatre. His original plays have been translated into other languages. He also worked a lot for cinema, including scripting and directing films. Born on April 1, 1943. Dulal Roy shaped his career by studying in National School of Drama in 1966 and received his diploma in editing from the Indian Institute of Film and Television, Pune. Dulal Roy went to Mumbai to learn how to direct Hindi films and became famous as an assistant in film editing of four Hindi films. Among the four films, Rajendra Singh Bedi’s ‘Dastaak’ and Asit Sen’s ‘Safar’ won the awards. Along with his telefilm ‘Yatra Aur Bandiyar’ and teleplays ‘Bhut aru Barhoni’, ‘Lily oi Lily’ and ‘Ningni Bhaworiya’ he penned several one act and full length plays like ‘Jukti Tarka’, ‘Bismriti’, ‘Pon Rokshya’, ‘Kankalata’, ‘Swarthopor Daitya’, etc. In 1979, he directed the film ‘Ashroy’ and played role as dedicated actor in Assamese films like ‘Aparupa’, ‘Papori’, ‘Anal’, ‘Iman Moram Kiyo Lage’, and ‘Antahin Yatra’.Meanwhile, Syed Sadullah was the first news reader of All India Radio Dibrugarh and announcer of more than 100 documentaries on Doordarshan, National Geographic and Discovery Channel. He is an A grade lyricist, renown music arranger, guitarist, and playwright of All India Radio. Sadullah has played guitar for songs of famous singers like Usha Mangeshkar, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Anup Jalota and Parveen Sultana. He has broadcasted more than forty documentaries from Akashvani Dibrugarh and has written stories for several award-winning radio plays and serials. He was awarded with national and State awards for his documentaries like ‘Alop Sur Bichari’, ‘Devata’, ‘Gandhi’, ‘Bichar’ and ‘Urukha’. He got high acclamation for the programmes ‘Bornali’ and ‘Dak Pokhili’ broadcasted from Dibrugarh radio since 1976 for a long duration. He was the announcer of Dibrugarh Radio from 1971 to 1975, staff artist from 1975 to 1983, staff artist of Mumbai Radio from 1983 to 1985 and staff artist of Dibrugarh Radio from 1985 to 2008. He was born on February 1, 1948.

‘Chatak’, besides other social activities since its inception has been conferring the Ram Prasad Bhuyan-Phuleswari Bhuyan and the Jitendranath Bhattacharya-Bimala Bhattacharya Memorial Awards as Chatak Sanman since 2009 on  individuals who have made notable contributions towards the cultural field of the State.
