MORIGAON, July 22: A drought-like situation has gripped several districts of Assam, including Morigaon, due to deficient rainfall this monsoon season, severely affecting agricultural activities and raising concerns among farmers.
Districts such as Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Dhubri, Baksa, and Bongaigaon have reported similar conditions, with vast stretches of farmland turning dry and unproductive.
In Morigaon district, the worst-affected areas include Silsaku and Baghara, where farmers are struggling to sustain their crops.
“The situation is grim. The fields have cracked, and there’s no water to irrigate. We are very worried,” said Tulsi Deka, a farmer from Silsaku.
He added that the irrigation department had introduced a few schemes several years ago, but these are now defunct due to government apathy.
Farmers across multiple villages in Morigaon have echoed similar concerns, stating that the ongoing dry spell could lead to a major agricultural setback if adequate measures are not taken urgently.
