GUWAHATI, July 7: Dr Arnab Das, founder & director of Maritime Research Centre, delivered a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation titled ‘Digital Transformation for the Enhancement of Livelihood for Communities in the Brahmaputra Basin’ before the esteemed members of the State Innovation and Transformation Aayog (SITA), vice-chairman Ramen Deka and co-vice-chairman Dhruba Prasad Baishya, at Janata Bhawan in Dispur on Friday.
The PowerPoint presentation shed light on the challenges and opportunities faced by the large population residing in the Brahmaputra River basin. It emphasised the vulnerability of the riverine population and the potential for significant changes brought about by the region’s tropical waters. The proposed project aims to undertake various community livelihood mapping initiatives, including habitat mapping, species mapping, resource mapping, vulnerability assessment, MSP-based livelihood mapping, climate change risk assessment, and resilience. These efforts are anticipated to generate numerous livelihood opportunities for the local communities.
Following the presentation, vice-chairman Ramen Deka addressed the audience and expressed concerns about the endangered dolphins in the Brahmaputra. He attributed their plight to a lack of proper water management systems. The vice-chairman expressed his support for collaborating with the Maritime Research Centre to conduct riverbed surveys and dredging, which are much-needed measures.
Among those in attendance at the presentation were Ankur Jain, managing director of Assam Skill Development Mission, Gaurav Upadhyay, special program director of Assam Inland Water Transport Development Society, BJ Das, director Planning of the Water Resource department, Hanif Noorani, director of Inland Water Transport, GG Das, advisor (Finance & Administration) and IT Expert, as well as officials from Assam Inland Water Transport Development Society, Water Resource department, Skill Employment & Entrepreneurship, and other relevant departments.
