DIPHU, Oct 31: The conclusion of the global Pink Month observation, dedicated to raising awareness about Breast Cancer, took place at Diphu Medical College & Hospital (DMC&H) in collaboration with the Association of Surgeons of Assam, Diphu branch. The objective was to educate individuals about the disease, emphasizing early identification and the associated signs and symptoms of breast cancer.
During the culminating awareness program at DMC&H, Prof (Dr) Sumitra Hagjer, MBBS, MS, Principal cum-Chief Superintendent, DMC& H, highlighted the significance of October being dedicated to spreading awareness on breast cancer, globally acknowledged as Pink Month. This collective effort aimed to educate individuals about the disease and promote early identification and understanding of its symptoms. The pink ribbon symbolizes solidarity and support for those affected by breast cancer.
Dr Hagjer underscored the urgency of the issue by mentioning that India stands second in the world in breast cancer mortality rates, highlighting the critical need for increased awareness and timely action.
She emphasized that patients often delay seeking medical assistance, especially in conventional societies, due to shyness or reluctance to address a private health concern such as breast cancer. The painless nature of the early stages further complicates early diagnosis. Dr Hagjer stressed the importance of women voluntarily conducting self-breast examinations, especially for those over 30 years, and emphasized the availability of facilities such as Sonography, X-ray, and Biopsy through the Assam Cancer Care unit at DMC&H.
The event served as a platform to disseminate critical information and encourage proactive measures for early detection and prompt medical intervention in the fight against breast cancer.
