BISWANATH CHARIALI, March 24: Dr Bhupen Hazarika is one of the most respected personalities in the socio-cultural field of Assam after Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva. His cultural activities were not limited to Assam but were recognised at the National level.
The title song of Gauhati University, the educational heart of Assam was penned down and composed beautifully by Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika, the highest national honour Bharat Ratna awardee. The National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau’s (NHRCCB) President Nishant Thard has regretted that at least a chapter based on the songs, literature and artistic life of the fatherly figure of Assamese music has not been included in the undergraduate curriculum of Guwahati University.
The organisation has requested the vice-chancellor of Gauhati University Prof Dr Pratap Jyoti Handique and the chief minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma to include at least one chapter covering the musical works and literary works of the great artist in the undergraduate arts curriculum. The letter to both of them has been sent directly from the organisation.
Mrinmay Kr Nath, the media officer of NHRCCB informed that the copies of the letter are also sent to the chancellor of the university, and the education minister of the state seeking an immediate response on the matter. Further, the National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau (NHRCCB) has requested the Assam College Principals Council and the Assam College Teachers’ Association to raise the issue with the implementation of the move from next academic year.
