GOLAGHAT, June 16: Eminent critic, educationist, social scientist and Sahitya Akademi award-winning writer Hiren Gohain was honoured with the Swahid Kushal Konwar Award by the Golaghat district committee of Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Assam (TAYPA) at a function held at the Amateur Theatre Hall recently.
The programme was organised by TAYPA in collaboration with its women’s wing and was attended by a large gathering of literary enthusiasts, students and members of the public.
Owing to health-related reasons, Dr Gohain was unable to attend the event in person.
However, a written message sent by him was read out before the gathering by Pikumoni Dutta.
In his message, Dr Gohain expressed gratitude to the organisers for conferring the honour and said the recognition was particularly meaningful as it came from Golaghat, a place closely associated with his childhood memories.
He also remarked that the award highlighted the enduring legacy of the Ahom community beyond the era of the Swargadeos and appreciated the efforts of TAYPA and the people of Golaghat in preserving and promoting Assam’s cultural heritage.
On the occasion, a commemorative souvenir titled Kushal was formally released by Purnima Das, president of the Golaghat Zila Parishad.
The programme also featured the felicitation of more than 40 meritorious students in recognition of their academic achievements. Speakers at the event highlighted Dr Gohain’s immense contributions to literature, education and public discourse and described the award as a fitting tribute to one of Assam’s most respected intellectuals.
