Kaziranga, Nov 03:The Central Cabinet has approved the construction of an elevated corridor through Kaziranga National Park. The ambitious project, estimated at ₹6,957 crore, aims to connect Kaliabor and Numaligarh with an 85.675 km elevated highway built entirely on pillars.
The initiative seeks to ensure the safety of animals and birds crossing National Highway 715, which passes through Kaziranga. Of the total stretch, 34.45 km will be built within the national park itself, while 30.22 km of the existing two-lane road will be expanded into a four-lane section. In addition, a new 21 km bypass will also be constructed to ease traffic flow. The elevated structure will feature specialised animal corridors, proper drainage systems, and design elements that preserve the park’s natural beauty.
According to official sources, the tender process has already begun, and the foundation stone is expected to be laid either by the end of this year or early next year. The project aims to be completed within three years. Once operational, the corridor is expected to cut travel time between Kaliabor and Numaligarh by nearly half, while boosting tourism, trade, and local employment in the region.
The project, prepared by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, is designed to prevent vehicle-animal collisions and provide safe passage to wildlife during floods. Both the forest and wildlife departments have granted their clearance for the project.
