DIBRUGARH, June 12: Flood and erosion has been a curse for the people of Dihing Than village for last several decades because every year the village has been losing huge land mass due to marauding erosion from Burhi Dihing River.
Dihing Than village is situated at Kalakhowa under Moran constituency in Dibrugarh district.
Rupeswar Das, 57-year-old villager said, “Our village has been shrinking due to constant erosion from river Burhi Dihing. We are having sleepless nights due to the erosion. As of now over 200 houses were washed away in the river. Due to the constant erosion, the village under Sivasagar district which was far away from our village is now coming closer.”
“Huge hectares of land mass were washed away in the river due to the erosion. We urged the government to take immediate steps to rehabilitate us. We are not safe in this area because of the erosion. The political leaders have used us as a ‘vote bank’ for their own benefits. They are not concerned about solving our problem. During elections, the political leaders plead for votes and assure us to solve the problem of erosion but after elections they are not bothered about our problems anymore,” Das said.
More than 200 houses were washed away in the river. The villagers are living in fear and an uncertain future. Flood and erosion are a curse for the people of the village because every year they are facing the same problem.
Meanwhile, some of the villagers are constructing their house in a safer location in fear of erosion.
“Moran MLA Chakradhar Gogoi came to our village and assured us of help but till date nothing has been done to solve our problem. Since our childhood we have been facing erosion problems but till date no one has solved our problem,” another villager said.
